The Age of Reason

The Enlightenment aka ‘The Age of Reason’ or more like the Endarkenment rejected the final authority of God’s Word over all of life. The philosophers and scientists for the most part put human reason at the centre of all of life as Reason replaced Revelation.

Natural Law took over, the Universe was viewed as One Big Machine and so the whole realm of human affairs became mechanised. When the post Enlightenment thinkers like Darwin, Marx, Freud and Nietzsche declared that God is dead, the ancient gods rose again. This is a basic law of sowing and reaping, no one but no one can escape that law.

The Post Enlightenment thinkers lied to us:

Darwin lied to us about where we came from

Marx lied to us about history, making it all about class warfare and economics

Freud lied to us about human guilt-because Jesus died on the Cross to remove our innate guilt of breaking His Moral Law.

Nietzsche lied to us by declaring that God is dead.

This is not to assume that before the Enlightenment, humanity was hanging out in the Hotel Reality and everything was hunky dory. Far from it. However, the Enlightenment assumed that Light was restored after the Dark Ages of religious superstition. Moreover, the Enlightenment as an intellectual movement that emerged in Europe in the 1700s played a pivotal role in reviving ancient pagan ideas that continue to shape our modern world.

The Dark Ages

The Dark Ages is a term for the Early Middle Ages (c. 5th–10th centuries), or occasionally the entire Middle Ages (c. 5th–15th centuries), in Western Europe after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, which characterises it as marked by economic, intellectual, and cultural decline. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Ages_(historiography)

The Middle Ages was considered to be ‘Dark’ compared with classical antiquity of the Greek-Roman period from around the 6th Century BC to the 5th Century AD. However, the Greek-Roman period was underpinned by Pagan Oligarchy.

Douglas S. Winnail in his article on ‘The Rise of Modern Paganism states:

“In Greco-Roman society, fornication, homosexuality, and the sexual abuse of children—advocated by Plato and practiced by the Spartans—were common and accepted. Art that we would term pornography was everywhere. The Roman baths, inns, and taverns were locations for gratifying any kind of physical desire. One reason pagans saw biblical religion as a threat was that they feared the Bible’s teachings about sex would “turn the lights out on that merry dance” (Steven Smith, Pagans & Christians in the City, p. xiii).

Post Enlightenment: God is Dead….

So the Post Enlightenment ‘thinkers’ declared in their breath-taking arrogance that God is dead. Of course, to declare that God is dead, you would have to be Omniscient and know with ABSOLUTE knowledge that God does not exist. So atheism is intrinsically religious because of its unwitting claim to Omniscience ironically. Did Darwin, Marx, Freud and Nietzsche have absolute knowledge that a personal infinite Creator God transcendent and independent of Creation did not exist. Obviously not.

So Atheism means that humans become their own god, evolving into its own predetermined divinity as Science and Technology attempt to merge the Digital with the Biological. Transhumanism becomes the new religion when Science, Technology and the State become Absolutized.

Technocracy

According to Patrick Wood, an author and lecturer who has studied elite globalization polices since the late 1970s the economic and political dangers in such things as:

“the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals, Agenda 21, Public Private Partnerships, Smart Growth, Green Economy, Smart Grid, Common Core State Standards, Councils of Governments, etc. The creation of all of these programs will be laid at the feet of the Trilateral Commission, in the name of Technocracy” (Technocracy Rising, the Trojan Horse of Global Transformation Introduction p1)

When human beings say yes to the serpent’s temptation ‘You shall be as gods’, human reason becomes the final authority on all of life and the yardstick to measure truth, justice and ‘Good and Evil’ is based on subjective opinion. As Patrick Wood says in the Preface

“The dark horse of the New World Order is not Communism, Socialism or Fascism: It is Technocracy”

Science, Technology and the State it appears are determined to a pursue a post-human future. When God is declared to be Dead, the ancient gods rise again.

What are some of the gods of our age then?

Scientism

Scientism assumes to be absolute while denying moral absolutes, a bit like the modern State. It is one of the main false gods which secular humanism has put its truth and hope in. What is so essential to the time we live in is that foundational to the modern worldview is the deeply religious belief that human reason, particularly in the form of the ‘scientific method’ can provide comprehensive knowledge of the world of nature and of mankind. Science then became the final source of revelation.

This is a fundamental pillar to modern humanism, the belief that ‘science’ is the guide to human progress and provides an alternative to both the Biblical Worldview/Faith and moral absolutes. Its one of the reasons why Western Governments during Covid 19 (84) all looked to the ‘Science’ for its decision making.

Technology/Technocracy

The identical twin to Science or Scientism is Technology/Technocracy which is dependent on Science. This is where films like Blade Runner, Gattaca, AI, I, Robot, Elysium, Terminator series (The Rise of the Machines) The Island and The Matrix were sounding the alarm. Did we get the memo? Sci Fi writers have long been sounding the alarm about how science and technology can go horribly and even demonically wrong. Its very bitter sweet. Science and Technology can of course be a major help to humanity.

But they can also become a major threat to humanity. Sci Fi writers it seems are more aware and more perceptive about the dangers we face, so much more than politicians, so called ‘leaders’ and the political elites. Indeed, it is the politicians, so called leaders and elites who ARE the danger. Sometimes it takes the world of the arts to penetrate light and truth and warnings to their nefarious agendas. Fundamentally, this is about Idolatry, the gods that fill the vacuum and rise again after Western Culture declared that God is Dead.

Scientism holds out the promise of omniscience, technocracy offers us omnipotence. Only the one true Creator God is Omniscient and Omnipotent as well as Omnipresent. God was declared to be Dead. OK God says, see how you get on without Me. So He gave over the West to its own lusts. Bit of a mess we’re in I would say, would’nt you.

Romans chapter 1 in the New Testament flagged this up two thousand years ago. But human nature ‘suppresses the truth in unrighteousness’ and ‘exchanges the truth of God for the lie and worships the creature rather than the Creator’. We suppress and substitute.

A Psychological problem such as self-alienation is often just a part of the sacrifice that the gods of Scientism and Technocracy requires. You could easily add isolation, loneliness, confusion, becoming dehumanised, addicted, and feeling like you don’t belong or fit anywhere because modern life has so deeply fragmented the creational structural norms that gave society objective coherence.

Whereas the one true Almighty God sacrificed Himself on the Cross of Calvary and even then does not force us to repent of our deep rebellion against Him and even forgave us as He was dying the most unimaginable horrendous death FOR US. One day all humanity will give an account to Him, whether we believe that or not. Jesus said He was the Way, the Truth and the Life….but modern man goes with Reason thank you very much as the way, truth and the life.

The god of Mammon

When a particular ‘metanarrative’ begins to break down and be rejected for another that is based on a human centred definition of Reality, even the most basic questions of life cannot be answered. Where did the Universe come from? Who am I? What is Right and Wrong? Why am I here' ? Where do I go when I die? And the scientific and technocratic ‘experts’ want to merge the digital with the biological…

Faith becomes broken, uncertainty and confusion set in, individuals and the masses are cast adrift, exposed, unprotected, fearful, internally insecure, and deeply alone in the core of their being….all because Idolatry has become the foundation of reality. This is what subverts our true identity as Image bearers of the one true Creator God.

The father of lies aka Lucifer was the first one to invent Identity Theft.

So money becomes a god to worship. Think about it, the ‘Military Industrial Complex’ that has murdered millions and millions is largely about profit and oil to become even more powerful. It is always about Worldviews and what you assume Reality is really about and what it is to be human.

Scientism offered omniscience, technocracy offered omnipotence and the god of mammon (money) offers ‘Consume and see that this god is good’. These three gods in particular of Scientism, Technocracy and Mammon (money) have dominated the modern age. In the so called ‘civilised’ West, people have put their trust and hope in economic growth, science and technology to ‘lead us in all our ways’.

However, the these three gods of the Unholy Trinity do not have equal prominence today. The god of Mammon rules supreme in the West. This is the main idol that bears the marks of a priestly religion because it mediates to us our worldly salvation: The Good Life of increasing material prosperity and well being. After all if you ‘aint got the Green (the $) you can’t make the scene.

Utopia this way, to the promised land of wealth, economic security and the freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want…while sacrificing the very essence of who you are, an image bearer of the Creator God created to reflect His Glory.

...And so the West in all its wisdom has returned to its ancient Greco-Roman Pagan roots based on Oligarchy.
